We are a group of musicians who meet weekly at various venues on the Island of Malta to play traditional music in an informal session. Visiting musicians are always welcome.

Celtic Connections Malta Lockdown Session May 2020

What is a Session?

Sessions are informal gatherings at which people play traditional music together. Typically, someone starts a tune, and those who know it join in.  The evening freewheels along, usually with a break in the middle for a rest and refreshments.

Every session has its own character.  Some sessions are quite serious and you would need to be a fast-playing, experienced musician with a large repetoire at your fingertips to have any chance of participating.

You may be relieved to discover that The Malta Session is at the other end of the spectrum! We play a mixed range of music at various speeds and are quite deliberately "beginner friendly". All traditional musicians are welcome no matter what their level of competence. If you are an experienced musician but are struggling to learn a second or third instrument, then this is the session for you.

Like all sessions, ours changes its character from week to week depending who is there. When our experienced members are there, there will be more fast tunes, with an emphasis on jigs and reels. On other weeks it may be a bit gentler with more waltzes and polkas.

The Music We Play

The music we are currently playing can be found by clicking on "Our Music" on the menu. Please note that we do NOT play rock, pop, jazz, country or world music. Jigs, reels, hornpipes, waltzes and polkas are our bread and butter.

There are few arrangements and, as in most sessions, you will usually find all the melody instruments playing the actual melody rather than a harmony.

We do play a few songs, but these will usually have an instrumental section, sometimes between every verse. If you do sing a song you have to be prepared for all the musicians to join in - we are not used to sitting quietly and listening!
